Since all my iOS apps and updates are now stored in the cloud, is there any reason to continue updating iOS apps in iTunes on my iMac? It seems like a waste of time and space.

Are you syncing your iOS device(s) to your Mac? If so, you need the apps there. What you can do is delete apps you no longer use from your iOS device(s) and from iTunes on your Mac.
