I have a late 2009 27" iMac, I will be buying a new 27" iMac soon. Can I use my 2009 as a 2nd monitor for the new one? will the thunderbolt work with the mini displayport on the old one?

thanks, and sorry for the dumb question, I couldn't find a clear answer anywhere else.

Nope, it will not work. Google Apple's Target Display Mode FAQ.

I thought thunderbolt was backwards compatible with mini display port and would sen video signal?

and that TB to MD would work, but MD to TB wouldn't.

I think it should work via target display mode, except that it would be limited to 720p resolution on the 2009 iMac display.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the new iMacs can do better than 720p in target display mode?
