I am looking into upgrading my memory from 4GB to 8GB. Which brand should i be buying and it max out at 8GB, will it work if i install 8GB kit along with my 4GB?

Brand isn't critical however two outstanding ones are Crucial and OWC at www.macsales.com. Just make sure you buy the correct specifications. Your iMac can accommodate up to 16GB. Adding another 8GB to the existing 4GB will bring it to 12 GB. If for some reason you want to take it to 16GB you would replace the original 4GB DIMMS.

When installing make sure you seat the RAM well, it does take a very very firm push.

Looks like Apple has a typo... All you need to know is:
PC3-10600 SO DIMM

(you can pretty much ignore the rest of the specs)
