Hi I have a mid 2011 IMac with 16gb memory and 1tb had.
Until recently it was fine. It was running really slow about Christmas and hanging doing the simplest thing with only browser open and couple icons on the desktop. I rebooted and took a while to boot and was ok then was really slow and would not turn off so I manually turned it off holding the power button, sand when it booted out went straight into dIsk recovery 2 or 3 times. I eventually decided to reinstall the operating system (high Sierra) and was fine to today. I went to reboot and took was 15 mind or so to get back to the desktop and would not recognise, keyboard (Apple keyboard 2). It then recognised my dad's the Apple keyboard 1 though was slow. I turned it off and back on and would turn off halls way booting would not even get info safe mode. I was able to get into disk recovery and failed the first aid. I am now trying the Apple hardware test but is taking a long time (1 hour at the moment) with the screen shot attached. How long will this take I was wondering?

I am going to go into a Mac repair shop close to me an explain the situation and might take it in for them to look at.

Thanks for the quick reply

That's what I was thinking of the memory but that wouldn't add up with what I was saying.

Do you know how long it would take for the Apple hardware test to trim since it's been running for an hour and 20 mins

i would say, ur HDD is dead.
I agree. I think the HDD has failed, or failing.

It can be really slow sometimes, but it looks like you did the fast version.

BTW, the Apple HW Diagnostic gives a lot of false negatives in my experience, and cannot be relied on to rule out faults.

If you can get your hands on a cheap SSD or even a flash drive, you can install the OS on it and see how the iMac runs.

If you use USB, keep in mind that it would be USB2, so most likely a little slower than your HDD when it was good, but still fast and smooth enough to rule out the HDD.

You can replace the internal HDD, or just run an external boot drive. I would use TB if you are doing external.

Sorry if I missed it, but...

Have you tried booting to INTERNET recovery?
This IS NOT the same as booting to "the recovery partition".

When you boot to the recovery partition, you are booting from the internal drive (which could have problems).

When you boot to INTERNET recovery, you are booting INDEPENDENTLY of the internal drive.

So... give this a try and get back to us.
Command - OPTION - R

If you use wifi you'll need your wifi password.
It will take some time to load -- be patient.
