Right, so I'm looking to get an iMac, but I'm uncertain as to which model to buy. I definitely want a 21.5 model, so it'll either be the mid 2011 or late 2012 version.

However, I want to put the SSD I'm currently using in my MacBook into the iMac when I finally get one, and this looks like a bit of a painful task, taking the screen out and all that.

Can anyone with experience with both models explain which is easier to open up and install an SSD where the regular HDD is?

I'm assuming you will be buying used, installing a SSD it's very possible to invalidate the warranty. Installing into a late 2011 is by far easier than a 2012.
