So I'm having somewhat of a weird problem with my iMac. I'm running the latest El Capitain which I'm sssuming is the problem because it has never happened before.
I use a secondary monitor thru HDMI and a mini display adapter with my Mac. I sometimes use that monitor as a gaming display for my game consoles (Xbox, ps4 etc). I noticed that recently (after upgrading to El Cap) that when I attempt to disconnect my secondary (asus) monitor my iMac very soon after will go black and restart. It will constantly go black and restart over and over and over. Sometimes it will make it to the sign in screen. When I sign in and it accepts my password and continues to boot.. it goes black and restarts again. The only way to get my computer to fully boot and be functional is to plug the secondary monitor back in (mini display -> HDMI). Only then will it stay on and function normally. I've tried shutting down safely, removing the second monitor and restarting but I get the exact same result.
Any idea why this is happening? It's driving me crazy. I don't want to have to rely on having this secondary monitor hooked up for the lifetime of my Mac. Is there a way to make it "forget" that I was ever using it? I'd be fine with never using the second display ever again.
Any suggestions or theories are greatly appreciated!
