iMac creating duplicate files on open

Hi

I have had some issues with an imac on OSX 10.8.5 on a windows server where it is duplicating files when opening. This is just by click to open rather than using open with (see attached)
It is frustrating having confusing duplicate files everywhere but also it does not allow you to work on the original file unless the original file is dragged and dropped to say the desktop.

Has anybody come across this that can offer some support? Its driving the user understandably crazy.

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.
