iMac Digital Audio Output

I have a question for anyone with the current iMac or the previous all-white iMac:

If anyone has used the digital optical audio with the little adapter, does it mute the onboard speakers?

I've used a optical audio wire forgot what it is called. Thing is with that hooked to my Home Theater receiver, I only get the speakers working when it powers up and get the chime. After that all the audio comes from the receiver. I hope that helps you in any way.

So what you're saying is that using a ToSlink Digital Optical Audio cable from your iMac to a receiver...you hear the Apple startup "BOOM" from the onboard speakers, and then from there on the onboard speakers are muted, and all audio is redirected to the receiver?

Yes that is correct. You could always change what the sound is outputted to in the Sound panel of System Preferences.

This is exactly what I wanted to know, thanks guys!

I asked because I currently have a Gateway 610 XL All-In-One,
and when using the Digital Optical Audio (which sounds great),
the onboard speakers are not muted, and I have to keep a 'dummy'
stereo cable plugged into the headphone jack. This wouldn't be
possible though on the iMac (when I get it in October) because
the Optical Audio and Stereo Audio come from the same "hole".

If anyone knows more about Digital Optical Audio, and could tell
me how I could mute the onboard speakers of the Gateway
(possibly through Windows), I would be very grateful!
