iMac Dual Display

Okay I have a iMac mid-2007 model its the 20inch version and I wanna hook it up to my 32inch Vizio T.V. using one of the HDMI inputs on my tv I bought a mini dvi to hdmi cord and plugged it in that way and it didnt work could I be doing something wrong HELP PLEASE

So, what exactly did not work? What appears on the TV? Does the iMac see an external display?
