Hi all,
Recently got my hands on a free 20" iMac Early 2008. It's the 2.66 model with the ATi 2600 Pro.
I'm a little concerned about the temps at the moment. I replaced the hard drive which was DOA and the machine looked pretty clean inside.
After installing a clean copy of Mavericks I noticed in iStat Pro that my GPU Diode was sitting at around 69-70C on idle and the processor was around 65-70C.
I took the machine apart again and took out the power board and used a straw to blow through the heatsink, quite a bit of dust came out but looking down the grills with an LED torch it looks pretty clear and there isn't a compacted brick of dust anywhere that you sometimes find in laptops.
The system is now much cooler but I'm still finding it idles on the CPU and GPU at around 50C which imo is still too hot and after running an HD video or a game it's almost too hot to touch on the top but the fans are kicking in accordingly when the GPU and CPU rise to 70C.
I know that those temps are reasonably safe but I'm just concerned that it is still running hotter than it should be, my 2008 3.06 24" with the Nvidia 8600 is nowhere near as hot but then I appreciate it has more space in the case.
I'm having a hard time finding the standard operating temps for this model so I was wondering if anyone has the same system and could tell me what they've experienced or can point me in the right direction.
I have done a PRAM and SMC reset too, also the machine is only carrying 2GB of RAM at the moment so it's working pretty hard. I'd like to upgrade but DDR2 is so expensive to me at the moment on my budget.
