Ive got hold on an older iMac and I saw some posts about upgrading the gpu.

Can I upgrade my HD2600 Pro to something else but the nvvidia 8800 GS?

Running Yosemite with 2.8 ghz core two duo, 4 GB memory and 320 gb hdd. Would install an SSD as well

The Nvidia 8800 GS is your only other option. You could try another newer card, but they may not work due to the MXM II and MXM III slot differences and the unique heatsink required for each different card.

It might, but it may not work in the 2008 iMac's MXM II slot. If it does, the heatsink may not align with the GPU die causing it to overheat.
