I have a 17" Intel iMac with vertical LCD stripes. Rather than replace the LCD for $500, I have a 19" Sony LCD TV that has a native resolution that matches the iMac, 1440 x 900, 60Hz, connected via Apple's mini DVI --> VGA adapter and the Display set to "mirror."

Initially, the system worked as expected, with the Sony displaying the desktop perfectly. It's been fairly consistent for the past week.

Yesterday, the system started up as normal, presented the screen for selecting the user/password, on the Sony TV. However, after getting past the user/password, it displays the desktop and doc for a few seconds, then the whole screen goes blue, then black, on both the iMac and the Sony.

Rebooting duplicates the process.

I unplugged the mini DVI adapter and when rebooted, the iMac goes back to normal and through the stripped screen I can see that everything is working as expected. When I plug in the DVI adapter while it is running, the Sony displays the "mirror" however . . . I lose all the icons on the right side of the top menu bar (Display, Airport, Date & Time, etc) on both displays.

Any ideas?
