iMac external monitor has stopped working

I have an Intel based iMac and have been running my old 17inch apple monitor as a second display for over a year now. For no apparent reason today the monitor stopped working. The screen just appears black. there is power getting to it as the power light is on and the computer detects the display fine. I can even move objects to that monitor, I just cant see anything. Any helps would be appreciated.

Do you have access to another computer, to test whether it's a problem with the display, or a problem with your iMac?
