has anyone tried using a external ssd as a boot drive on their imac? does it work?

It would work, but it would be pointless because you'd be limited to the FW800 bus at maximum. Until Thunderbolt external drives are readily available, it's not very smart to use an external SSD as a boot volume.

I dont get the question?

SSD is just a drive -- its not like its magic or anything -- its got a standard SATA connection just like any other drive made.

So of course it will boot as long as its in a USB or Firewire case.
