How would the new iMac 27 be for After Effects and Cinema4d vs a 2008 Mac Pro 2 x 2.8Ghz Quad Core Xeon(8 core) with 6GB of RAM800Mhz and a 9800GT512MB? Thinking about the upgrade but not sure if the money is worth the difference in performance just yet.

I can't answer your question because I have no idea how well those applications can scale to use multiple CPUs and cores, but you may get good advice on the Mac Pro sub-forum.

AE is multi-core aware, so the MP might be faster -- but only by a few seconds here and there. With a GPU and RAM upgrade it might be a better fight.

AE likes tons of ram, 6 gigs isnt enough, and the 9800 GPU is lags compared to the 6970M

Regardless -- you are talking differences measured in 10s of seconds at most -- irrelevant to answer which is faster.

unless you already have a 27 or 30" screen to go with that macpro... you want to factor that cost in.
