Hello all. It took me a long time to figure out what the problem was and i think I have. Anytime I click on the display configuration prefs in the icon at the top of the screen the iMac OS locks up and I get the spinning wheel of death. There are no other times that this happens, iMac runs fine until I select this. Here are some facts:
-iMac 2009 21.5" 3.06 core 2 duo
-10.7 Lion
-Envision EN7750 connected with apple mini display port adapter
-3 years of this setup with no problem
-Envision is now not functioning. I suspect bad caps but several sources and two confirmed cables produce the same issue which is:
-power on
-good image of source
-5 seconds to 2 minutes later all black no display
-this is why I had been going to the display preferences so much recently to try and figure out if my monitor was bad. At the time I had not tried multiple sources.
-Recently tried to fix with time machine restore. Restore successful - No joy on display pref lock up of OS
-machine reboot fixes problem
-I had gone into my logs and found some references to parallels showing errors and since I have not used the XP vm that was there in a long time I just wiped everything out per the parallels site instructions.
-tonight it happened again as I was going to change the display shutoff timing and the OS locked up.
Lots of info, any thoughts?
Is there a display prefs .plist?
