I just installed 16GB RAM into my 2009 iMac 27". Now when I put it on screen saver it freezes, is it due to the new RAM I just installed? Here's the error report, can anyone decipher what it the issue?

About 15 lines from the bottom you see a short system profile and it thinks you've got 20GB RAM, not 16. So yup something's messed up. I've installed bad RAM on my iMac before and it led to intermittent wonky behaviour including kernel panics & system freezes. Try dropping back to 8GB and see if the problems continue.

Sorry I forgot to say that I added 16GB (2x 8GB) to the 4GB (2x 2GB) that came with the machine. So yes there is 20GB RAM total

In the System preferences/specs page - the RAM modules say OK. So not sure if the name RAM is defective.

I do have the computer on sleep after 15 minutes. Wondering if this is causing the freezing. But surely the iMac should wake when you press the keyboard or mouse?

Is there an application to check the RAM installed? I think I have lost the DVD diagnostic to do the hardware test..

Run Memtest OS X over it. Link included.

Was the memory Apple compatible low density modules, the same as the original 4GB and from a Mac specialist such as Crucial orOWC?

Also increased memory can result in boot and wake slow downs.

http://www.memtestosx.org

Thanks for link. Do I have to burn into a DVD to run memtest?

Memory was bought from Ramcity.com.au

Spec:

MAR3S1067T8G28X2 iRAM 16GB Kit (8GBx2) PC3-8500 204-pin SO-DIMM for Apple For: Not Specified;

When you say wake slow downs - are we talking seconds or minutes? The wireless keyboard and mouse do nothing when pressed to wake the iMac, no green light on keyboard even. The only way I could get it going was to hold the on/off button on the back to hard shutdown and press again to restart. Unless it needs several minutes to wake?

Never had a 2009 iMac but I would think 10-15 seconds.I would suggest easier to whack it onto a USB thumb drive.

Regarding Bluetooth, it should be there in all 24" and 27" models. They run Bluetooth version 2.1 and if the keyboard and mouse require later versions, you may have to look to see if you can replace the card. Cards do fail so check out Apple System Profiler (About This Mac) and see what is says under WiFI.

If the keyboard and mouse have not been used before, you may well need a wired unit to set it up. Have you tried turning the units on, going into System Preferences > Bluetooth. Turn On and Pair?

I just went to  > Software Update. Says it's all up to date.

I think it's pretty clear that one or both of your new 8GB RAM chips are faulty. Pull them both out and return them to the seller. They'll send you new ones that hopefully will work properly. That's life.

Went to work and pressed the keyboard and the iMac wakes without any problems. So it's got to be the new RAM from Ramcity. It's going bacK

If installed ram and suddenly starting incurring crashes, there's a really high chance its the ram. Swap it out and confirm

Yeah. I took out the new 16GB RAM and put back the original 2x 2GB that came with the iMac - it's working normal again. So I'm returning the 2x 8GB back to ramcity.com.au

After MULTIPLE emails and hoop jumping and taking photos of the RAM modules, Ramcity is saying my iMac can't take 8GB modules – what a load of crap!

this is what their saying..

Based on the information available to us now after troubleshooting, the machine you have is from a run of 11,1 imacs that have a different logic board on them than the majority of the others in this range. A rough estimate puts it at around 3% of machines in this range that are affected. Unfortunately they simply will not run stable on 8GB modules even though they accept them. This is likely something to do with the chipset the boards use. However with the limited information available we cannot say for sure, only that it is a known issue.

The machine you have simply will not be able to go past 16GB as 4GB modules are it's limit. My sincere apologies for the troubles this issue has caused.

I'll be organising a return for you asap but before I finalise it I'd like to ask, does your machine already have 16GB installed? If not would you like to organise the appropriate 4GB modules in order to max it out? If it does already or you'd simply rather not, please let me know either way so I can organise your return.

I'd love to do so but the machine won't accept an 8GB module. We see this issue rarely as I have mentioned. The chance of both modules being faulty in the exact same way is simply to extremely low for that to be the case and any modules I replaced it with would perform the same.

Yes the machine is capable of 16GB I was mentioning that not disputing it. I was advising that in order to run stably your machine requires 4GB modules. 4x4GB in order to achieve 16GB.

Coming back to my previous question with this in mind. Would you like to organise 4x4GB modules for the machine or to return the items for a refund as I will not replace the 8GB modules directly as they simply will do the same thing and you'll be back to the same issue.

Best regards,
