I've been having a very strange problem on my Imac (intel) 21.5" for the past few days. On start up, I get a blank blue screen. If I switch the display on and off using the power button a few times, the normal desktop display comes on. But at this point, none of the icons respond to mouse clicks, the mouse pointer moves around ok. Even the hidden dock does not come into view. Keyboard shortcuts also do not work. Pressing the volume/brightness etc keys has no effect. After about 5 mins it suddenly starts working and all is normal until the next start up.

You either have a corrupt os, a bad harddrive or a bad logic board.
Save all your data
Reinstall Mac os X
If you still have issues replace the hard drive
Stilllll problems... New iMac

Get as much done under your warranty coverage as u can

OK, problem solved. I reset the PRAM and emptied the "start up items" folder and restarted. All is normal now.

i'd at least run disk utility and repair permissions and verify your HD.

like a previous poster said make sure you dont have any critical errors with the file system/HD
