I just got an iMac G3, and was told it just needed the OS re-installing. However, when I first booted it from the CD, I found that it couldn't recognise the hard drive. Thinking it was just a faulty hard drive, I purchased a new one and installed that, but it has the same issue.
There also seems to be a loose wire in the case, thin and black. Here's a cropped photo from when I had just taken out the RAM:

(sorry it's a bit out of focus)

I think it may be something to do with the fact this wire isn't connected to anything.

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

That wire is the antenna for the Airport card. If you don't have one installed, you can let it just hang around. But try to not let it touch the logicboard or it could short something. The hard drive must be in either cable select mode or master mode. The optical drive is set to slave mode.
