My friends is trying to install linux on his old g3 mac but is having trouble booting debian from disk. the hardrive is new and currently has no os on it, and we own no mac os x discs.
plz help

What do you mean, exactly? Does it find the disk, but choke in the middle of start up? Or is it not finding the disk at all?

Try holding option down next time you start up the iMac; that should give you a list of bootable volumes. If it recognizes the CD you should see a icon with tux on it.
