iMac G3, Would it be worth it?

Well i have always wanted an iMac g3 ever since i first saw one. Would it be worth to buy one now? I can get one for like $40.00 and sometimes cheaper. I think that i would be using it a lot. I can also get a white iBook G3 but the logic board issues are are a reason i would not buy one. I know that my computer now is better than an iMac G3 but i still want one. :apple:
 
Put a faster bigger hd and one gig of ram and they are surprisingly fast. Get the 500 on up.

Just fixed up a TEN YEAR OLD 233mhz imac for a friend. Running Tiger with 384mb of ram.

Incidently, the non firewire iMac G3s are slightly bigger machines, and of course take laptop ram.
 
I've got a 400, 500 and 600MHz iMac G3. They're not bad. See if you can get a 600MHz or 700MHz model though. I really wouldn't waste my time with anything slower than 500MHz.
 
ok let me settle this now. please just do yourself a favor and get one, youre not gonna stop wanting one until you do. i really wanted one a couple of months ago so i got it on ebay. i upgraded the hard drive and ram and installed os x tiger on it. not one regret here, youre getting a totally functional mac for $40, how can you go wrong?? P.S. i got the indigo, it looks great!
 
Just don't forget if you decide to upgrade to Tiger it will cost you more than $40!

Most MR members I know have one or two spare Tiger retail discs floating around. I do. I even have Panther retail, even 10.1 retail discs.

iMac G3s are workhorses because usually people did not take them off their desks. I have a stable of friends around me with running iMac g3s that are going strong after 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 years now...
 
What about an emac? They are basically an iMac G3 with a G4. Much faster, nicer design, and will allow you to run Leopard.

I have an eMac and while it's a great machine, you seem to want an iMac G3 and an eMac is just not the same. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend too. That would be a good price for a last rev eMac (1.42 Ghz) but for anything else it is a little high. I got mine a (1.25 Ghz) for $160 or $200 shipped.
 
hi, i just sold my last imac g3. I cantell you from experience with these for ten years now that if you get a 600MHz- to 700MHz, about $70, it will be great. not the fastest thing out there but why not.
 
Hmm

I have a no-firewire, tray CD loading, original 233mHz iMac indigo with 64 Mb ram and an 8Gb hard drive. Tiger loaded, I believe. It's loaned out to the inlaws, but they are giving it back because I'm giving them a G4 Graphite.

I don't know what I'd do with it. Likely it's bound for recycling, unless somebody in Toronto wants it.
 
These old imacs are great! but i would stick with a slot loader wih firewire (pretty much the 500mhz and up). You need the 8meg of vram to do pretty much anything. a nice 7200 rpm hdd (free to $30) and a gig of ram($60) will make it feel like any newer pc. That is until you start timing your file compresions or watch HD video. For everyday use, they are awesome.
BTW, htese imacs run amuck on craigslist for under $40. Mine were $30 and $25.
 
good advice.
was looking to get my mother to make the switch without a huge $$ outlay to start with.
all she does is surf the net and get emails plays with some photos I was toying with the idea will a G3 be just too slow or should a G4 be a better purchase.
