Basically, I have leopard installed on this computer and i did a software osx update and when it restarted, it never got past the grey screen. ive turned it on and off multiple times yet it still doesn't get any further. i have the original install discs but don't know what to do with them. there are files that are on the computer that i need as well which i haven't backed up. help anyone??

Sometimes updates can take a long time to finish and then a long time to boot up the next time. It would probably have been better if you just waited it out because it can take an exceedingly long time on older Macs. What I would do at this point is start up with your system discs and execute an "Archive and Install" which will preserve your data while reinstalling the operating system.
