I got my iMac G4 in today, and it was running 10.4.11 Tiger, but the install was pretty messed up so I redid it. Upon booting up the installer (10.4.7 Server universal installer, all I have currently) I noticed the screen was flickering horribly. I got through the install and into the OS, and it still flickers. What's really odd is the amount of flicker depends on the screen brightness, the middle and highest brightness have next to no flicker, but everything else flickers at varying degrees. At certain brightnesses it looks like the screen is about to die. Even at the highest brightness though the flicker is noticeable and very annoying.

I also installed 10.2.7 on a second partition, and it works fine at all brightnesses with no flicker whatsoever. The original 10.4.11 install also had no flicker. Now I am not sure what is wrong here, it seems to be specific to this OS. I did up the colors from Thousands to Millions but it made no difference. It's almost as if the refresh rate is incorrect, but I can't change it. That doesn't explain the brightness issue though. Anyone have any ideas short of trying an older version of 10.4?

Is the flickering still there after installing all updates (10.4.11 etc.)?

If so I'd try the retail PPC-only 10.4.6 disc.

Installing updates fixed it. I was quite surprised by that because the computer is far older, I thought it would be too new if anything.
