So I have this iMac G4. Everything was working well, but I noticed it was kinda slow. So I decided to check the mac settings and I found out it only has 256 MB?? The odd thing was that it had only one 512 MB Ram stick (I removed the internal) so how can a 512 MB RAM can turn into a 256 MB?!??!?!

It could be that you have a high density stick in there. PowerPC Macs cannot use high density ram. If you put a HD stick into a PowerPC Mac, it will read and use only half of its actual value.

How can I know it is a high density?

It has been working fine for the last year. The RAM it has, it was being used by my old dead ibook G3.

BTW I cannot post screenshots yet, my dad is making some accounting stuffs in excel 2008

If it worked fine in the past and it worked in an old iBook, it is very likely low density.

Remove this stick and clean contacts. Reset PRAM too. If it won't help, it's time to buy new RAM ;)
