Hello all,

I was wondering what the sound coming from the internal speakers of the new 24" iMac would be, compared to that from the iMac G4's Pro Speakers. I always found their sound to be quite good (considering their size; I have my iPod connected to my HK/Infinity stereo for actual music playback). How will the speakers in the new 24" iMac fare against them?

By the way, I couldn't find the specs for Apple's Pro Speakers anywhere. Does anybody happen to have them?

Well if you have the G4 speakers there and have an iMac 24" on the way then you'll be the first to know! Give us a report back once you get you're mac. :)

No, no, no. Sorry, I must not have been clear. I don't have a new iMac on the way. I was just curious how much sound quality I'm going to give up when I will buy the next 24" iMac. Or, of course, how much better the quality will be.

Aha, I see what you mean. To be honest speakers sound different to different people. If I were you I would play my favourite cd on a computer connected to the G4 speakers and then take the cd with me to an Apple store or Apple reseller that stocks the 24" iMacs and pop it in and give it a try there. :) Sorry I can't be any more help!!

Though I haven't heard the speakers on the 24", if they are anything like the previous G5 iMacs, then the old G4 speakers will sound MUCH better. Apple has gone pretty much downhill with the quality of their built in speakers lately. Even the speakers on my old iMac G3 put any of Apple's current integrated speakers to shame.

For some reason I doubt your iMac G3's speakers put to shame any current built in apple speakers...

Don't be so sure, the ol' G3 Speakers were exceptional.

Quality wise, it has always gone up....But the maximum volume has decreased, thats the only down side to my Macbook, the maximum speaker volume is quite low.:(

Before my iMac G4 I used an old (bondi blue) iMac G3, and I didn't think the speakers in the G3 model sounded very good. I'm guessing you've used a newer (slot-loading) iMac G3. My girlfriend had one, and it's speakers were indeed a whole lot better than that of mine. They were pretty poor sounding, to be exact. The Pro Speakers, on the other hand, are indeed pretty darn good sounding ones.

So the iMac G5's speakers weren't very good? I did read that the amplifier in the 24" iMac is twice as powerful as the one in the other models. Also, do the 17" and 20" iMacs have dual speakers on each side, like the 24" model? If not, than the latter will have way better sound than the former ones. But how that sound stacks up against that of the Pro Speakers? I have no idea.

I never had a G4 iMac but I just moved from an 20" Core Duo to a 24" Core 2 Duo. I can tell you the 24" speakers are FAR superioir to the 20". The audio is much clearer and the volume is MUCH better. On the 20" I almost always had the volume set to the maximum and even then there were times when I found it too quiet. However, with the 24" I find the volume fine at between only 3 and 5 volume bars.

Finally, with the 24", the maximum volume is actually far far too loud for general use, which is the way it should be.

No matter how much better the built-in speakers are in the iMac G4 than in the iMac 24", or vice versa, it's going to suck. :p

It's like trying to decide what stinks worse......crap or s***.
