I just had my superdrive replaced, the previous one died. This drive plays and burns CDs fine but will not recognize a DVD. I have tried both a commercial movie DVD as well as a blank. I am running 10.3.9 and here are the specifics of the drive:

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105:

Manufacturer: PIONEER
Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105
Revision: 1.30
Serial Number: CDDL021309WL
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal

I am a PC convert and not very knowledgable with this operating system. Could this be a software issue? Is there something that I can set or re-set? I have preferences set to open the DVD player when a disk is inserted.

The replacement drive was purchased from WeLoveMacs so I suspect it is refurbished.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I was under the impression that combo and superdrives use diffrent elements for each kind of disk. CD's one set of laser elements and DVD's another. Perhaps it is another bad reader/writer, at least as far as the DVD elements are concerned.

Check the 'About This Mac' -> More Info -> Hardware to see if you indeed have the right product installed and that the computer is recognizing it.

The drive is definately being recognized. That's interesting information about two different laser elements. It would explain why CDs work and DVDs don't. It's really frustrating, paid $30 bucks for Comp USA to install it and now I have to decide whether I want to attempt the removal, return and reinstall or pay them again. I will certainly be demanding reimbursement from We Love Macs!

Thanks for the reply. If anyone has any other options I would sure like to hear from you.
