Hi, I came a cross a nice deal for an Imac G4, 700mhz, 256megs ram, 10.4...... Before I am buying this little piece of awesomeness :D
I need to know how well it does playing a standard .AVI file with
Divx or Xvid codec. (I believe they're the same).

Can someone help me out?

A simple yes, it will work just fine, is enough ;)

Will it work? Yes it should work as long as you have the codecs installed. Will it work well? I guess that would depend on the bitrate and resolution the video was encoded in. For example, my 600mhz G4 is able to handle most divx files, but there is the occasional stutter. My G4 also has a full 1mb of l2 cache which helps a bit. If you could, I would look for one of the newer G4 iMacs with around 1ghz speed If you want to be on the safe side.

Resolution is a huge factor. iPod/iPhone sized video will be fine, 720p+ will not be watchable.

Nothing h.264 will be watchable, especially youtube.

Thanks for the responses!! I know enough. I think I'm going with a 1ghz now, just to be sure.
