So my iMAC G5 developed the dreaded and well known overheated/blown power supply. Now everyone of you have doubtless heard that this was a very common problem with all the G5 iMACS. In fact, Apple even had a secret out-of-warranty" repair program in place for the 20" model.
Anyway, I dropped mine off at the Apple store for a confirmation of the diagnosis. Sure enough, dead PS. Cost to repair was a whopping $212.00! An anal rape to say the least. I did, however, authorize the repair. When I came in to pick up the computer, I made it clear to the clerk behind the desk that the repair cost seemed exorbitant especially in light of the fact that these G5's have had PS problems since they were introduced. Anyway, to make a long story short, after getting a manager involved and raising my voice to a sufficiently disruptive level, I received the repair for free. Moral of the story, DO NOT complain about your iMAC problem BEFORE they repair it. Let them do the work, and then bitch to high heaven in the store (make sure its a busy time like a Saturday). You can VERY likely get this repair comped.
