iMac G5 brightness issues

my iMac is seriously very bright to the point where its hurting my eyes, i know there is a brightness control under sys. pref. displays, but it doesnt seem to work should i calibrate it? its starting to become a problem

Are you using Mac OS X Tiger or Panther? Calibrating I don't believe will help make the screen dimmer. On my mothers iMac that has Panther, I used the brightness bar in the Display part of System Preferences, and it dimmed the display. So you got me stumped if your brightness bar isn't working.
