Im not sure whether this is a software or hardware issue? is the issue on the photos a known one?

The screen is physiclly sound, no knocks, marks dead pixels etc

It also happens before the o/s loads on the grey apple screen at the start, you only see half of an apple!

would this suggest hardware? if so, what is the likley fix/cost?

Its no longer under warranty

From the pictures I would assume it's a GPU issue, which sadly means that the logic board will have to be replaced, which will be pretty expensive.

I suppose get it diagnosed, and if it's the logic board, just buy a new Mac.

Ok, thanks, in case that is the case, does anyone know the recommended spec g5 i should get to run windows 7 to a good standard? (there are a few windows apps i still need to run, and would like to use windows 7)

No G5 is going to run Windows. Instead, you would need to go for one of the newer, Intel iMacs. All of them should run Windows fine.
