Hey guys I completely forget I had 64GB of ram for a first generation Mac Pro….my iMac supports ddr2 memory as it was the last generation iSight but my question is would I be able to take the heat spreader off the module which are held on by clips and use it in the iMac? I know on the power Mac g5 you could but Ecc would be disabled and ram would be used as regular memory. Anyone have any ideas?…..ecc or server ram tends to run hot I just don’t wanna burn this thing out?

I am a bit confused about the 64GB of MacPro RAM, are these extras or did you manage to get 8x8GB working in there?

G5 iMac officially supports 0,5/1/2GB modules but at least 1 type of 4GB is confirmed working. If you got 4GB sticks it might work if they are 8GB your chances decline.

As for running hot, most likely due to running faster at 5300 in a MPro compared to the 4200 it will do in the iMac.

Yeah just had extra ram sitting around that I forgot I had. There ecc memory modules. I ended up trying it a few hours ago and it does work. Im running a stress test for stability to make sure everything remains stable. So far so good. Also ran Apple Service Diagnostic and it detects it as regular memory so im assuming openfirmware disables the ecc side like in the powermac. I just wanted to post here because its not clear online wether it will or will not work. my only concern is heat........with the g5 and radeon chips running in the high 60's it kinda concerns me although I should remember that most g4s ran hot and were designed to get a little toasty.
