Backups are failing from iMac to new Time Capsule. MacBook Pro backs up fine.

Here's the setup:
- new 1TB Time Capsule as main router on 2nd floor
- Airport Extreme on 1st floor acting to extend WiFi
- MacBook Pro, roams, mostly on 1st floor
- iMac G5 on 1st floor

I suspect there's a network problem with the iMac.
- it has a 3rd party USB WiFi adapter using RealTek software to drive the card, the built in Airport drivers don't work with it.
- that adapter was installed in a pinch when the built-in Airport card couldn't reliably connect to the network
- OS has probably never seen a fresh install since the machine was new

What I think I'll try is:
1) drop a hard-wired Ethernet cable down the steps and see if the iMac can backup successfully.
2) if it does then I'd probably do a clean OS install, maybe the built-in Airport card is OK, just bad software.
3) if the clean install is not enough then I'd probably replace the internal Airport card with a new card (or an external adapter that works with the Airport drivers - if such an animal exists)

Am I thinking clearly here? Any predictions on what is actually wrong?
