iMac G5 Slow Start Up After Leopard Install

Hello,

I have an iMac G5 PPC 2.0GHz 2GB RAM.

Around two weeks ago I installed Leopard 10.5.6 so I could use the iPhone 4 (which is on it's way). This morning the computer was taking quite a while to start up (2-4 minutes for the grey screen and around 5-7 minutes with just a blue screen). This also happens when restarting.
This is a new thing, can't remember it ever happening before (on Tiger and with Leopard since I've installed it). The general use of it on the whole is ok in terms of speed opening and using apps (I only ever usually use Word, Firefox and Mail) but the past day or so it seems to have been lagging a little.

I know that the specs are ok for Leopard so I've ruled that out but due to the fact it's now over five years old I'm a little wary that these start up problems may be the start of future further problems.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

i had the same problems on my mini g4 with leopard boot times got slower and slower with 10.5.8 and even apps started to slow down too , it needed ages to open websites with safari 5.0.1 it was like i had installed a hack to reduce the processing power by half in my mini
i installed tiger again and the mini is back to original performance

@Superjudge I am running 10.5.8 and I did verify the disk and everything checked out. Start ups still slow and lingers on the blue screen.

@MacHamster68 It's certainly something I've considered but I paid about £80 for Leopard only a week or so ago so it's very much a last resort thing at the moment.

My initial thought was simply tweaked sectors, not a dying hard disk. But yes, if you think the HD is dying by all means replace it ASAP!

Have you looked under Accounts in System Preferences to see if you're running any process at startup that might be causing this issue? Beyond that, I have to say that my wife's iMac G5 is pretty much in the same boat. Once it starts up, it's just fine, but getting there can take a while.

The biggest hard drive that came ever with an iMac G5 is 250GB, you get 500GB for less than £35 incl. shipping.

A 2.0GHz G5 with 2GB RAM is unlikely to be slow on Leopard, as this is one of the machines it's intended for. A Mac Mini with a G4 processor anywhere between 1.25 and 1.5GHz is another story.
 
even Apple recommends to backup before updating to 10.5.8
and leopard came after the transition to intel and it is simply more focused to run on intel Mac's
and even on my eMac 1.42 sold in 2006 (one of the last ones sold ) with a ati 9600 and 64mb Vram and 2 GB ram it slowed down to a crawl compared to Tiger as i did try it there too and its running excellent with tiger ,
and i got yesterday evening a powermac g5 dual 2.3 with 4 gb ram and leopard on, the first thing i did was installing Tiger and it flies

so i too wasted about £80 on leopard ,thrown the disc away , as i could not bring myself to sell it on ebay ,as i will never sell something i am not 100% satisfied with
 
I find it interesting how many people have issues with Leopard on PowerPC Macs. My PowerBook runs just as fast with Leopard as it does with Tiger. In fact, even boot up is faster.

However, iMac G5's have extremely bad start up time and if you're hard drive is going out that's definitely not going to help either.

It sounds like you're going to need to order a new one off of newegg or something.
