How do the built-in iMac speakers sound?

It is possible to connect any old speakers with a mini jack to the iMac's optical audio out, correct?

The speakers lack bass and it is a hollow sound. They are not very loud.

Yes, to the extent of my knowledge you can connect any speakers with a 1/8 in. plug.

Confirmed, any speaker set with a mini plug will work with the imac, and I highly suggest a pair if you listen to music at all.

Check the link, the Klipsch pro media 2.1 speakers are awesome. I have had these for 6 months now and they sound great. 200 watts of power, thundering bass, good highs and lows. I listen to Rock, rap, and everything in between. They run $150.

For $350 you can get the klipsch 5.1 system with 6 speakers, but I recommend the $150 set.
