imac goes dark after i touch the mouse

i have anew imac. when i come back to the computer after being away, the screen is dark. i touch the mouse, the screen lights up for a second and i see what is on it, then the screen goes dark. i hit other keys, but it stays dark.

then i thought it was turned off, so i touched the button on the back and heard it close down. i touched it again and it turns on.

what is wrong?
