I have just got myself a iMac 20". I bought it in London and hand-carried it home to Egypt because of a huge price difference, so I'm not sure where I stand as far as the warranty goes. A fan kicked in 5 minutes after I first fired it up and would not stop, even when the computer went to sleep. I downloaded the iStat widget and found it is the HDD fan running at 6000 rpm but the HDD temp is about 42ish. I tried to do the reset thing, unplugged everything for 15 sec, that works for another 5 minutes or so then the fan runs away again. I also downloaded smcFancontrol but still no change.

Try download SMCFan Control to control the fan...And see what happens. Since your imac is intel and I think it should be downloadable.
