My iMac's hard drive recently failed, when I turn it on and it gets to the grey screen and tries to load it gets stuck there.

I recently had an email from Apple saying they are re-calling certain models because of hard drive failure and luckily my iMac fell into that category.

However I now have the problem with getting all my data off my iMac, I cant get into the computer to do this however when I took it to the Apple store a few weeks ago when I had it checked out the guy who wasserving me managed to boot up the OS X through his hard drive. It was then possible for him to backup all my data (but he was not allowed to for copyright reasons) because he could access my apple hard drive.

Does anyone know how I can get my OS X onto an external hard drive?

How much data it might take up?

And lastly when I am running my OS X via the hard drive how do I then backup everything to the hard drive?

Thanks in advance,

Lee
