Hello Everyone!!
This is my first post but I've been coming here for wisdom for years...thank you!!
I have a music studio in Pasadena, CA. I purchased a iMac i7 in December to be the "hub" of my production station.
I have not had any of the issues I have read about with video, heat etc. But I have had audio issues almost from day one. At first I thought it might be a problem with the FireWire interface - and Apogee Ensemble. After trouble shooting that for a while and trying other interfaces, it became clear it was the computer.
3 Issues:
#1 - Glitching audio when being played by iTunes, Finder, online stream in Logic Pro is open AND my external display is plugged in. This can be described as stuttered audio, in and out and very quick volume swells...strange. It took me a while before I figured out that if i unplugged my external display this went away. However, if the display is plugged in it can be resolved by closing Logic or assigning Logic to another audio device.
#2 - Massive freakout of the audio inputs in Logic usually when I start playing audio from other applications...this sometimes happens without that but that is a sure fire trigger. This can sometime be remedied by reseting the audio driver but sometimes not. This occurs without my external display plugged in - separate issue.
#3 - Massive single CPU spiking in Logic. Even with a very modest workload and nothing even playing Logic will be pegging one CPU and creating awful noises as a result. Sometimes if I remove any active inputs it will return to using many cores. This is intermittent. Often I can have a huge amount of plugins and virtual instruments at a 128 buffer and it will work beautifully - like a $2,600 computer should!!! This is sometimes in combination with issue #2.
Sorry for the lengthy description but it's a strange one. This is the center of my business and I desperately need to get it sorted. I am planning to take it back to the Apple Store for a second round to see if they can diagnose it but they say they need to recreate the issue there...so i'll need to bring in all sorts of stuff to recreate the conditions...
I'm hoping that one of you out there might have a brilliant idea of what this might be...I have video and audio if the problems if it helps...
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I'd be so grateful for any help you can offer!!
Jonathan
