Hi all,

I am thinking of upgrading my 2011 27" iMac to a Retina and using the old one as a second display for the Retina. My question is, would the old iMac's hard drive (and maybe ports on the back) be shared over thunderbolt with the Retina since the machine is turned on , or would the sharing just be over the wireless network they are connected to.

Thanks!

iMac in target display mode

This site seems to suggest drive mounting would only work over wireless:

Target Display Mode won’t give you a “free” Apple Thunderbolt Display. What we mean by this is that when you connect a computer to your iMac, don’t expect to gain any hub functions like those found the Cinema and Thunderbolt Displays. Your source Mac won’t be able to see or use the card readers, USB ports, iSight cameras, or microphones of the host iMac. It’s only video and audio, folks.

Thanks for the link. Seems like an opportunity missed to me, but I guess people wouldn't buy as many cinema displays of you could use an old iMac as a screen and a hub.
