My aunt recently was interested in purchasing my IMAC and I turned it on after it been sitting for a long while and having some issues. The computer sometimes will turn on without issues but other times will not find the hard drive. I believe what the issue is is that the HDD fan is no longer working. So my questions are

1) is it worth fixing?
2) can I just get an external HDD and install osx on that?
3) aprox sell value as is as well as fixed
4) cost of new internal HDD
5) how hard to fix it?

----------

Sorry I believe it is the early 2010 or late 2009. I don't remember exactly

1. Yes probably.
2. Yes
3. Hard to say, check E-Bay and Craigslist in your area and see what they're selling for.
4. Depends on who does the installation, i'd recommend an AASP, it's probably going to range from $200-$400.
5. You need the disk that Apple sells because beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's that had heat sensors integrated into the HD. Some people have managed to get others to work however IMHO these guys are tinkerers and willing to damage their machine. I'd spend the money at an AASP.
