iMac iPhones problem

Hey guys,

An interesting and tragic event occurred when i tried to sync my iPhone with my iMac last night. It started to sync then itunes froze, then my iMac's entire screen switched to thin vertical colored lines. The only way to fix it was to restart the computer.

I tried restoring both the phone and the mac. it appears to only happen when I'm actually adding stuff to the phone (podcasts, apps, etc.) I would bring it to the apple store but my warranty expired yesterday.

any ideas? hardware or software?
