Hi

My disk is broken.

Would like to change 3,5 disk with a 2,5" SSD

I have this one

https://www.harddrivesdirect.com/product_info.php?products_id=461439

But I can read here:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/app...-inch-aluminum-how-to-upgrade-hard-drive.html

That not all disks will fit.

I don't understand what this thermal cable does.

can anyone explain me what it is for and do you think it's possible to use my IBM SSD disk from link?
If you don’t understand that, then maybe you should get someone else to do the job for you?

Uhh I love that kind of help :-(

Sorry... maybe because i'm not english spoken.

I do understand that this cable have something to do with temp. messuring on the disk.

Why should I let someone else doing it, if someone have tried it before.
I assume thats why we have this and other forums?

So what they write is that this thermal cable is there an it has to fit the disk.
What happens if it's not there?

If you have trouble with the instructions, I would suggest getting a repair shop to do the install for you. A lot of people here have been able to do it themselves, but many people have broken things in their attempts too. It's not necessarily an easy job according to iFixit.

Yes its possible, I have just done it.

As the hard drives are different sizes and you are going from 3.5" to 2.5" you need something like this to hold it securely in place https://www.amazon.com/NewerTech-Ad...04967&sr=8-13&keywords=3.5+to+2.5+adapter+ssd

The existing hard drive has another (3rd) connection for the temperature sensor. If you buy a new SSD like the one you have it will not have the required connector for the sensor. That means that when you run the iMac the fans will blow full and make a noise as it has no sensor to regulate the HDD temperature.

This can be fixed in two ways. Using a piece of software called http://www.hddfancontrol.com/ which needs to run at login. The second much better fix is to install this replacement OWC thermal sensor which means that no extra software has to be installed. Its pretty easy to add in when replacing the HDD. Mine runs perfectly with this installed too.

Perfect jonatron.

Thanks a lot

I will buy the OWC thermal.

I know I need the adapter.

It's not the first time I have opend my IMAC.

Wow, that's crazy expensive for a for a 256 GB SSD. $600 CAD!

I was going to suggest a kit from OWC, a 240 GB with thermal cable, tools, adapter etc. I have it in my mid '11, $148 USD.
