Folks, what do I need on the external monitor for ports, and what dongle and cable?

The iMac has...four USB 3 ports (compatible with USB 2) Two Thunderbolt 2 ports
Mini DisplayPort output.

I'm looking at Dell monitors BTW.

Support for HDMI, DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI

you'll probably want to look for a monitor with DisplayPort (rather than a dvi or hdmi connection.)

I'd suggest getting a display that has a displayport input (or minidisplayport, or both).

Then, you'll need:
Minidisplayport (iMac end) to displayport (display end).

Best chances of success on the first try that way, IMO.

Here's a list that might be of use to you in your search for displays:

Thanks all for being so helpful. As I had a credit at Dell I went with this:

https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/s...19d/apd/210-arcv/monitors-monitor-accessories

This one also pivots to portrait. I wonder if the iMac and support that? Desk space is at a premium but I guess I'll move a couple of extern hard drives and USB speakers.

Is this going to work? What Apple adapter do I need for this baby? Do I also need a cable? If so what kind? Going to head to Apple Store tomorrow and pick up an adapter.

Have a Happy New Year's Eve and Day. I'll be having a Surly or two ;)

yup. There's a rotation option in the display control panel.

(This is my secondary screen. As a display, it's on the inferior end of the spectrum)

I was referring to my own personal secondary screen, not to the Dell. Sorry. I have nothing against Dells.

Here's a mention from a site that reviews lots of monitors

Well it is shipping. I did order from Amazon a mini-display port to full size display port cable. I hope I got that right. Also a VESA adjustable arm from Dell. I don’t know if the arm supports portrait mode. I guess I’ll see. Thanks again.

Thanks again all. The monitor just arrived. I'll let it warm up and give it a go. Still waiting for Amazon cables to arrive. I did find a mini-display port to HDMI. I guess I could give that a shot while waiting fore the mini-display to display cable to arrive tomorrow.

The desktop background is a street painting in Denver a few months back.

The Dell monitor arrived yesterday, and the mini DP to full-size DP Amazon cable today. There was no manual in the Dell box. So rather than RTFM ;) I played with the buttons.

My small desk is a challenge. I have a Vesa adjustable arm coming and I will see if that is a good option.

I wonder if it is possible to adjust both screen to have a similar tint. The iMac looks a little yellowish sometimes. Or maybe it is a brightness adjustment I need to make between the two monitors?

The Dell does adjust in height, and supports portrait mode. I'll do come cable cleanup once I decide which orientation works best or if the VESA arm is a good idea.

Thanks for everyone's help! Have a Happy New Year!!!
