I was using iphoto, went to blow up a photo to inspect it,imac locks up blue blank screen tried to force quit but no can do the only thing that makes it come out of its trance was to hold the power key for about 7 seconds(turn off) and then restart it,it's working fine now.

Any idea what happened and is it ok to hold the power key and shut down when all else fails?TIA.

If it only happened once, don't worry about it. It's probably just a minor glitch and may not even be related to what you were doing at the time. If it's recurring, reinstall iPhoto.

And yes, it is okay to hold down the power button (force shutdown) if it freezes. All that happens is you lose everything on RAM (anything that isn't saved).
