I do a lot of digital photo work, am a long-time user of Macs and MacBooks and used dual displays on a Mac Mini years ago. I sometimes miss that dual screen setup. Currently, I have a 2017 27" iMac and am looking at buying a MacBook, mainly for portability. I recently saw a picture of someone who appeared to be using a MacBook directly in front of an iMac, with the MacBook keyboard controlling both, i.e. shared. I'm wondering if the iMac can be connected as a second display on the MacBook and if so, what is the simplest way? I would not want mirrored, but two distinct displays. What about the OS on each - does it have to be the same, or is the MacBook (or iMac) OS controlling the whole show and the iMac (or MacBook) is "just" a display? How would the two screens be managed, and what are potential use cases for such a setup, since the MacBook is considerably smaller than the iMac? Finally, last, but maybe not least, would the MacBook have to be Intel or M1, or would either work? Thanks for any comments/pointers to setups!
UPDATE: After writing all of the above, I searched for answers myself, like I should have done originally, and it appears that this type of setup only works for pre-2015 iMacs with Target Display Mode. Can anyone confirm this is true?
