Hey all, first post here.
My iMac was behaving really badly when I returned from a family vacation. It allowed a short time of backing things up (very slowly) before dying. Through AHT and other testing I figured it was just a simple hard drive failure--I seem to remember there being a HDD recall on this unit but I got it second hand.
Put in a newer version of the Seagate 1 tb drive and all is peachy, I'm typing on it right now in fact. What I was curious about was some gunk that I saw on one of the wafer boards (I'm assuming this to be the power supply). As you can see from the closer up picture it's yellowish and rubbery. I'm assuming this is leaked electrolyte and not something that Apple puts on to protect? Am I totally out to lunch?
I was living in a basement suite that flooded ~a foot and actually hit the outlets (old house) where the iMac was plugged in. That was about a year ago. I don't think this gunk is related to the recent hardware failure, only something that I noticed it when taking off the screen.
Am I right about this being the power supply? If so, is this the aftermath of a blown/leaking transistor or something else more benign? As I've likely ran it in this condition for ~a year, am I safe to assume it's safe to run for now? Should I replace the Powersupply? What's likely to happen if I don't?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Brandon
