Have formatted the new drive as htf+ with Gparted in the machine. I also tried it with NTFS

When I switch on at the beep I hold down the control and r and nothing happens. eventually showing a folder ikon.

If I put an installation disc No 1 in nothing happens and ends up with switch off.

Any ideas what is wrong.?

What year and model Mac are you using?
To use Internet Recovery the key combination to try is cmd+opt+r, but if your Mac is older than 2010 it normally does not support internet recovery because the original OS that it shipped with was not distributed via the internet, but instead was distributed on DVDs (OS 10.6 or earlier). Some older macs can support internet recovery if they previously did have a newer OS installed that was distributed via the internet (10.7 or later) that included a firmware update to support internet recovery.
