I did a erase and install of OSX today and then restored from a time machine back up, now I can not get past the log in screen. My password is not recognised for some reason.

How can I fix this. This is the worst thing that has happened since I switched and I feel that I have lost all my data.

Please be gentle.

Boot up from the install dvd. Go to utilities at the top menu. Go to change or reset password. Might work.

You haven't. Worst-case scenario it can be manually recovered from the Time Machine drive.

For future reference, archive & install does exactly the same thing as a Time Machine when "preserve users and network settings" is selected, but with less muss.

Please be gentle.

You were expecting something else?

Isn't that the firmware password reset utility?

Yeah, that's probably the best idea at this point.

Yes. Worst case would just be a reinstall.

I think he was expecting that we would rip the hard drive out of his computer, and ship it back to Apple in an uninsured no-signature evelop and then never get it back.

I have tried booting from the install DVD and it keeps taking me to the log in screen and asking for my password, which is not being reconized.

Hold down the C key from when the startup chime goes until the Apple logo appears.

That worked and I am now back in, so simple but so far away. Thank my lucky stars I kept my old Windows laptop.

Thank you to you all.
