iMac not shutting down properly

Since I installed El Capitan a couple of weeks ago, my late 2012 iMac doesn't shut down or restart from the Apple menu. I tried from the troubleshooting account and it works like it should. Has anyone else noticed this problem? If so, how did you correct it?
