Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and I just recently purchased a brand new imac (27”, I7, 8GB, 2GB ATI). The problem that I am having is this imac doesn’t have an optical output so I can not take advantage of my Logitech 5.1 surround sound. I called Apple support but they don’t have anything that will help me out. (However the gentlemen did inform me that in a few months imac’s will be able to sync with apple TV and therefore the optical on the apple TV can be used)But in the meanwhile, I purchased a DIAMOND XS71U 7.1 Channels 16-bit 48KHz USB Interface Sound Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829111005 ) however I’m having difficulties to get it to work properly. Can anyone please guide me it to what I should do to get a 5.1 optical output???

The 1/8" output on the iMac serves as a digital audio output port. All you need is a 1/8" to optical adapter or cable, like this:

Yea, you don't need the external sound card for OSX, unless you want to get 5.1 sound in games in Windows in bootcamp perhaps.
